The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Currently used pharmacological treatments include NSAIDs, opioid analgesics, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants, which alleviate pain through different mechanisms. As understanding of pain mechanisms deepens, more effective and safer new analgesics are being actively developed.
