Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Semaglutide, an approved GLP-1 receptor agonist, has shown therapeutic potential in diabetes-related renal disease, underscoring the need for relevant preclinical DN models.
GemPharmatech has developed the BKS-Lepr−/−Nos3−/− mouse as a progressive model of DN, designed to better recapitulate key features of human diabetic kidney disease. This study evaluates the model’s metabolic and renal phenotypes over time, including hyperglycemia, albuminuria, and progressive renal pathology, and assesses its response to semaglutide, lisinopril, and combination treatment. The findings support the potential use of BKS-Lepr−/−Nos3−/− mice for preclinical evaluation of therapeutic strategies for diabetic kidney disease.
