OVX-induced Rat Osteoporosis Model

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to increased bone fragility and higher fracture risk.

OVX-induced rat osteoporosis model

The OVX rat model is the gold standard for studying postmenopausal osteoporosis. By surgically removing the ovaries (ovariectomy), estrogen levels drop sharply, mimicking postmenopausal bone loss in women. This leads to increased bone resorption, reduced bone formation, and eventual osteoporosis.

Fig.2 OVX-induced rat osteporosis model

After the ovaries were removed, the weight of OVX-induced osteporosis rat increased significantly(Fig. 1A). Vaginal smear results showed a disturbance of the estrus cycle in OVX-induced osteporosis rat(Fig. 1B). Data were presented by mean ± SEM, n=6-9. *, p < 0.05; **, p < 0.01; ***, p < 0.001 and ****, p < 0.0001.

The Tb.BMD and Tb.N of hind limb femurs in OVX-induced osteoporotic rats decreased significantly at W10, while Tb.Sp increased significantly. Data were presented by mean ± SEM, n=3-5. *, p < 0.05; **, p < 0.01; ***, p < 0.001 and ****, p < 0.0001.
